From Paris to Marrakech, tackling Climate Change is, also, an Obligation of Human Rights, through, "Geneva Pledge"

On 6 March 2017, the Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights participated in a high-level discussion on the role of the Geneva Pledge for Human Rights in Climate Action in integrating human rights in climate action. The discussion was organized by the Permanent Missions of Costa Rica, Fiji, France and Morocco to the United Nations in Geneva. The programme for the event is available here. Building a Climate Change Literate Generation

OHCHR co-sponsored along with Viet Nam, Bangladesh, Fiji, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and UNESCO a side event to the 34th Session of the Human Rights Council on 2 March 2017. The event explored different practices for raise children’s awareness of and promoting their participation in efforts to address the adverse impacts of climate change including through education, direct participation and capacity-building. A human-rights based approach to the Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Climate Agreement

OHCHR co-sponsored along with a number of civil society organizations a side event to the 34th Session of the Human Rights Council on 1 March 2017. The event considered the procedural and substantive nexus between the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Climate Agreement and human rights instruments, particularly examining how existing expert and peer review mechanisms mandated by the Human Rights Council and other UN bodies can strengthen accountability across these agreements. Expert Meeting on Climate Change and Human Rights 6-7 October 2016

OHCHR will host an expert meeting on climate change and human rights from 6 - 7 October 2016 in Room XXIV of the Palais des Nations. This two-day meeting will bring together States, civil society organizations, UN Agencies and experts to consider the implications of recent State commitments, including in the Paris Agreement to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, related to human rights and climate change. The meeting will include both expert panel discussions and interactive breakout groups. The meeting will be informed by short discussion papers which will be made available on this web-page prior to the meeting. More information here.

Side event, “The Post-Paris agenda: bridging human rights, climate change and the environment”, 33rd Session HRC, 13 September 2016

Signatories of the Geneva Pledge on Human Rights and Climate Action hosted the event “The Post-Paris agenda: bridging human rights, climate change and the environment”at the 33rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Executive Secretary, and experts met to discuss links between human rights and climate change. Side event, “Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and the Right to Health”, 2nd UN Environment Assembly, 23 May 2016

UN Environment, together with OHCHR and other partner organizations, hosted the event “Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and the Right to Health” at the second United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi. The discussion highlighted implications of the human rights language in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, elements and benefits of a rights-based approach to sustainable development, and next steps to promote sustainable and inclusive climate action.
