Commission on the Status of Women 14-16 March 2017
OHCHR supported the participation of a number of regional human rights mechanisms (RHRMS) devoted to women’s rights in the 61st session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York (14-16 March). This provided a platform for constructive engagement with the international mechanisms on women’s rights as well as global CSOs in the context of inter-governmental fora. During this session, OHCHR organized a side event entitled “a journey to strengthened cooperation between the international and regional mechanisms on women’s rights for these mechanisms”. The key participants were the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Rapporteur on women’s rights; the ASEAN Commission on women and children; and the Special Rapporteur on women’s rights of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.” Opening remarks were made by the ASG for Human Rights and the Ambassador of Belgium. International and regional mechanisms together with representatives of UN agencies and CSOs held a closed consultation on how to concretely operationalize such cooperation. Following this consultation a number of bilateral meetings were also held between RHRMs and UN agencies on women’s rights. Finally, the international and regional mechanisms met with the UN Secretary-General and presented some of the discussions and ideas which emerged from the consultation. The SG indicated that his office would be willing to provide support to institutionalization of such cooperation.
