On 8 September 2010, Ms. Liliana Valiña, former deputy representative of OHCHR country office in Mexico, took up her new functions as OHCHR's human rights adviser in Paraguay. The deployment of a HRA in Paraguay responds to the Government’s request for increased engagement of OHCHR in the country.
The HRA will promote the work of international human rights mechanisms and support national authorities in complying with their reporting obligations under the UPR and Treaty Bodies; she will support the design and formulation of a national human rights action plan; she will assist the UN country team in integrating human rights into programming, especially in relation to indigenous peoples; she will also assist in building the capacity of the UN country team, national authorities and civil society with regards to human rights instruments and standards.
